If You're Reading This

If you’re reading this,
then you know
that I was here
once,
on this earth
once,
breathed the air
and felt the cool, October rain
drizzle on my hair
once.

I smelled the roses once,
drank good wine once,
I made some money
and bought a typewriter
once.

I made a woman smile once,
kissed a child goodnight once,
I fell in love with laughter
and even love itself
once.

And then one lonely night
I prayed
for all the other little souls
to find happiness
before they—

I loved once;
I lost once.

I laughed at war once,
breathed in smog once,
I made neighbors cry
and families fight
once.

I smoked stale cigarettes once,
drank cheap vodka once,
I couldn’t even count the times
once.

I lived a lie once,
lied all the time once,
I made friends,
enemies,
couldn’t tell the difference
once.

I should’ve died once
or twice or thrice or—
until I felt God
and saw myself
once:
naked, lying on a bed,
unable to remember
my own name
once.

And if you’re reading this,
then I know
that you’re also here
once,
on this earth
once,
breathing the air
and feeling the rain
drizzle on your October hair
once.

So on one lonely night,
I must ask you,
pray for all the other little souls
and their happiness
before yours

is gone
too.
